The Austin Chronicle announced plans for this year’s Austin Music Awards ceremony today including a brilliantly programmed “Return to Austin High” segment featuring blazing Austin superstars Gary Clark Jr. and Shakey Graves as well as talented local rapper Phranchyze. Other Austin High alums Suzanna Choffel, Warren Hood, Elias Haslanger, and Eve Monsees will also perform at the show.
The show will also feature a “Viva the Diva” segment with top Austin frontwomen Gina Chavez, Nina Diaz, Jazz Mills, Sunny Sweeney, Carson McHone, Tameca Jones, and Dana Falconberry.
The night will conclude with a tribute to the late great keyboardist Ian McLagan of Faces and Small Faces, who passed away suddenly in December. Currently Patty Griffin, Alejandro Escovedo, and McLagan’s Bump Band are scheduled to play the tribute but the Chronicle hints “some of the tributee’s legendary British buddies” might also show up.
The ceremony which traditionally takes place at the beginning of the South By Southwest music festival, will take place Wednesday. March 18, at 7:35 p.m. in the Austin Convention Center ballroom. Legendary local guitarist Charlie Sexton will serve as musical director for the program and KUTX DJs Laurie Gallardo and Rick McNulty will emcee. This year’s event will be produced by local mover and shaker Celeste Quesada.
