Fabulous Thunderbirds blues guitarist Jimmie Vaughan and Flatlanders troubadour Joe Ely will serve terms as Texas State Musician in 2015 and 2016, respectively, the Texas Commission on the Arts announced Wednesday.
Vaughan and Ely will be formally designated on Thursday at the state Capitol via House and Senate resolutions, along with newly selected State Artists in other genres.
Candidates are nominated by the general public, after which the Commission selects the artists through a series of committee processes.
“The great talents of the 2015-2016 State Artists, along with all of those who were nominated, help contribute to a distinctive cultural identity that makes Texas a great place to live, work and visit,” State Rep. Ryan Guillen, chairman of the House Committee on Culture, Recreation, & Tourism, said in a press statement. “It is important that we celebrate the distinguished career achievements of these artists which have enhanced the lives of so many.”
