Willie Nelson thinks pot will be legal in the entire U.S. in less than a decade

Austin music giant Willie Nelson sees green in the future for the entire red, white and blue. The country singer believes marijuana will be legal in all 50 states in less than a decade, according to an interview with a Texas news station.

Nelson, who’s seen cloud of smoke or two in his day, told ABC affiliate KSAT 12 that he never expected to see legalized pot anywhere in his lifetime. But the way the red-headed stranger sees it, green begets green:

“The bottom line is money, and once those old guys see how much money is being made in Colorado and Washington — all the places that it is legal — they’ll say, ‘Hey, wait a minute. We may want to think about it.’”

The subject came up, of course, because Nelson is launching his own brand of weed this fall, called Willie’s Reserve. In the official announcement, Nelson promised his cannabis company will offer “the best on the market” and will be grown and sold in Colorado and Washington. (For those playing along at home, recreational marijuana use is legal in those states.) The Associated Press reports that the singer/entrepreneur is teaming up with “master growers” to ensure quality control.

In other recent Willie news, the Library of Congress earlier this month selected Nelson as the 2015 recipient of its Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. The “On the Road Again” troubadour is the first country musician to receive the honor.
