Austin360 On The Record: Sweet Spirit, Ashley Monical, Oh Hellos

sweetspiritalbumcoverSweet Spirit, “Cokomo” (Nine Mile). Notable news from Tuesday involved the Merge Records signing of A Giant Dog, Sabrina Ellis and Andrew Cashien’s other band, for an album due out next year. But equal focus this week goes to the impressive full-length release from Sweet Spirit, in which Ellis and Cashien team with seven more musicians. They’re at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York this weekend, but they have quite a few shows around town upon their return: Oct. 24 at ABGB, Oct. 26 and Oct. 29 at Hotel Vegas, and Nov. 1 at Uncle Billy’s. Here’s the single “Baby When I Close My Eyes”:

AshleyMonicalAlbumCoverAshley Monical, “Facing the Shadow” (Firecat). Recorded in Wimberley with producer John Evans, the solo debut from the former Wildflowers singer-songwriter features 11 tracks of Americana-styled originals, with contributions from members of Band of Heathens and the Mastersons. In-store Oct. 16 at Lone Star Music in San Marcos, release show Oct. 17 at Saxon Pub. Here’s a solo acoustic version of the album track “Honest Man”:

 

Oh Hellos, “Dear Wormwood.” Indie-oriented folk-rock from the San Marcos sibling duo of Tyler and Maggie Heath. Playing Nov. 21 at Stubb’s Jr. Here’s the title track:
