OUT THIS WEEK

RobertLaRocheCDcoverRobert LaRoche, “Patient Man.” A longtime collaborator with eclectic Austin singer Patricia Vonne and a former frontman of Massachusetts rock-pop band the Sighs, LaRoche steps out on his own with 12 tracks of well-crafted singer-songwriter material. Working with producer Darin Murphy and a local crew including string player David Perales, bassist Scott Garber and drummer Dony Wynn, LaRoche delivers often dark but richly melodic tunes based around his beguiling vocals. Standouts include the title track, a richly layered passage of insistent pop, and the hauntingly elegiac “Yellow Rose Girl.” Release show Nov. 6 at Strange Brew.

SHURMAN_COVER-w-BorderShurman, “East Side of Love” (Teletone). Launched in Los Angeles before relocating to Austin in 2009, Aaron Beavers’ alt-country outfit now stretches back about 15 years, though they’ve largely been on hiatus for the past year. “East Side of Love,” recorded locally at Cedar Creek Studios, finds the band in its trademark rock-and-twang form on songs that should be welcomed by their longtime fans, even as Beavers leans toward a more confessional songwriting approach. Release show Nov. 6 at Continental Club.

AaronMcDonnellAlbumCoverAaron McDonnell, “Battle Bend” EP (Independence). In his first release since relocating from Seattle to Austin about a year ago, McDonnell shows promise as compelling singer of original country tunes written in a classic vein. He’s purposefully tossing his hat into Dale Watson’s Ameripolitan ring with these five songs (Watson even gets name-checked in the track “Hill Country Saturday Night”), and it’s a good fit. McDonnell’s sounds is shaped partly by pedal steel ace Bob Hoffnar’s fluid honky-tonk playing; other contributors include guitarist Redd Volkaert and Aaron’s wife Dani McDonnell, who duets on “Day to Day.” Release show Nov. 6 at Lamberts. Here’s the track “This Far”:
