If there was any doubt about whether Wednesday night’s Tumblr showcase would make good on its promised feminist theme, Seattle punk band Tacocat cleared it up from the jump. Clad in a sparkly gold blouse, the band’s lead singer announced, “This is a song about your period.”
“The first day of your period,” she added. Then the band threw down a tightly packed set that covered everything from wage inequality to mansplaining.
After their set, Texas politician Wendy Davis took the stage to enthusiastic applause. She gave a brief history of feminism starting with the work of suffragist Alice Paul.
Acknowledging the great strides woman have made, Davis said, “We can not say we are free.” She ticked off a list of issues that hold women back: reproductive rights being rolled back, campus sexual assault, lack of fair family leave policies and the wage gap. She rallied the enthusiastic crowd to work to change these issues.
The most important thing to do, according to Davis?”Vote,” she said, every time.
The crowd cheered wildly.
