Prince at the Erwin Center: Austin partied like it was 1985 and 1997

Prince’s final Austin show was during SXSW 2013, but he made two stops at Austin’s arena concert venue the Erwin Center earlier in his career.

In 1985, at the height of his “Purple Rain” superstardom, he played two nights, on Jan. 29 and Jan. 30. Also on the bill was Sheila E., whose uncles Alejandro and Javier Escovedo were partners in the Austin rock band True Believers at the time. American-Statesman staff photographers were on hand both nights.

He returned almost 13 years later, on Nov. 2, 1997, a year after releasing both “Emancipation” and “Chaos and Disorder.” The Erwin Center shared this photo from that concert with us:
