Watch Lukas Nelson continue father Willie’s ‘Don’t Mess With Texas’ legacy

Saving Texas from littering is becoming a family tradition for the Nelson family.

Willie Nelson first recorded an ad spot for the famous “Don’t Mess with Texas” anti-littering campaign in 1989, singing a little ditty inspired by “Mammas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys.” The ad campaign was started in 1986 by the Texas Department of Transportation as a way to combat the rampant littering on Texas highways. You can see Nelson’s original ad below.

Since the campaign’s inception, many celebrities have recorded ad spots for the campaign, like Matthew McConaughey and George Strait.  But as the campaign celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, Don’t Mess With Texas is ramping up the celebrity factor. Among them is Nelson’s son, Lukas.

In two new ad spots (one 15 seconds, another 30 seconds), Lukas Nelson can be seen playing a variation of the same tune Willie played 30 years ago, in the same spot.

Here’s the 15-second one:

And here’s the 30-second one:

Other stars expected to record spots for the 30th anniversary are the Eli Young Band and Grupo Fantasma.
