With this morning’s announcement that Willie Nelson is bringing his long-running Fourth of July Picnic back to Circuit of the Americas, we offer a look back at its auspicious debut there last year.

The 2015 Picnic poignantly turned out to be the last one for Merle Haggard, who teamed with Willie on a few songs from their “Django and Jimmie” album. Other highlights came from Kacey Musgraves, Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell and Jamey Johnson, with more than 20 acts appearing from noon until past midnight.

Check out our Austin360 photo gallery with dozens of photos from the event.

Also worth checking out is our timeline produced by our resident Picnic authority, Dave Thomas, who’s been to more than a dozen of the 40-odd celebrations that have taken place since the early 1970s. Here’s a bit about each and every one.
