As we reported last week, Austin bassist and producer George Reiff underwent surgery a few days ago for a brain tumor related to stage 4 cancer that also was found in his liver, adrenal gland and right lung.

Reiff, one of the most active and widely known musicians within the city’s music community, quickly received an outpouring of support from friends, fans and well-wishers. An ongoing crowdfunding page set up to help with his medical expenses has raised more than $100,000 in less than a week.

On the crowdfunding site and on a public “Friends of George Reiff” Facebook page that was set up shortly after the diagnosis last week, his brother Michael Reiff has provided medical updates. They included a report that the surgery went well and that George was released from the hospital earlier this week.

“He will spend the next week or so recuperating and building strength, and will then begin treatment for the lung cancer and its associated tumors,” Michael wrote in an update on Tuesday. “Chemo and radiation are likely to start as soon as next week.”

Meanwhile, several local artists and venues have teamed up to turn some of their regularly scheduled shows into benefits for Reiff. And tonight (Friday, Aug. 5) at Strange Brew, many of the acts most directly associated with Reiff will gather at Strange Brew for a marathon four-hour fundraiser (8 p.m., $20). Performers include Charlie Sexton, Jon Dee Graham, the Mastersons, Miles Zuniga, Michael Fracasso, Nakia, Jeremy Nail, Scrappy Jud Newcomb, Conrad Choucroun, Bruce Hughes, Dustin Welch, Jeff Plankenhorn, Kacy Crowley and William Harries Graham.

At 10 a.m. this morning, Sun Radio will air a set of music that features Reiff either as producer or as the bassist. No word yet on exactly how long the set will be, but given that his AllMusic credits show 228 entries, it could easily be an extended set.
