The Houston native has long played music on the side and frequently has been spotted in Austin night spots over the decades when he has been in town for film projects or other concerns. Some of his movie roles have included musical turns (“Great Balls of Fire,” “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia”), and he made an acting cameo in Bonnie Raitt’s video for “Thing Called Love.”

Friday also is the opening date for “A Dog’s Purpose,” which recently drew criticism and an investigation into allegations of animal abuse on the set.
