Friday: Joe Ely’s 70th birthday bash at Paramount Theatre. In November it was Ray Wylie Hubbard; now it’s Joe Ely. Gradually, the troubadours who helped put Austin on the map during the 1970s heyday of progressive-country are hitting the big seven-oh. Ely’s early work with the Flatlanders, followed by his breakout solo records that brought him a national following, paved the way for a lifelong career that’s still bearing fruit. Last year’s official Texas State Musician, Ely put out a great new record, “Panhandle Rambler,” in 2015; other recent projects have included a couple of books and the release of demos from his technologically groundbreaking early-’80s “Hi Res” album. $25-$60. 8 p.m. 713 Congress Avenue. austintheatre.org. — P.B.

Friday: United: A Black History Month Boogie at Sahara Lounge. “We call this party United, because we believe in the power of solidarity and community under one common groove. … Our story did not begin with slavery, but with our families, traditions, cultures and music,” organizers say. Expect a slick mix of hip-hop, neo-soul, Afro-house and acid jazz as DJs Adzua-Gette, Urban Mello, Shani and Toby G take the wheels and silky singer Serafia takes the mic. $5. 9 p.m. doors. 1413 Webberville Road. saharalounge.com. — D.S.S.

Friday: Porter/Vandenburg/Nurre Benefit at Hard Luck Lounge. The highway crash on tour last fall that took the lives of bandmates Chris Porter and Mitchell Vandenburg, and injured drummer Adam Nurre, hasn’t faded from the hearts and minds of their friends. Nor have the expenses associated with the tragedy. Thus this fundraiser at East Side hangout the Hard Luck, with all proceeds going to Nurre and the families of Vandenburg and Porter. Donations of any amount will be accepted, with music from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. by Ben Ballinger, Mayeux & Broussard, Garner Sloan, Carson McHone, Bonnie Whitmore, Matt Phebus, Josh Dodds and Haydon HooDoo. 3526 E. Seventh St. facebook.com/hardlucklounge. — P.B.

Saturday: Barclay Crenshaw at Kingdom. After spending the last decade building a name for himself as Claude Von Stroke, a house music producer and founder of the trend-setting Dirtybird label, Crenshaw debuted a new hip-hop oriented project under his birth name this month. It’s loaded with melodic grooves and wistful soul and features guest spots from the Underachievers and the Cool Kids among others. $15-$20. 9 p.m. 103 E. Fifth St. kingdomaustin.com. — D.S.S.
