One of the most wonderful things about South by Southwest is that there’s music happening all day, every day — even first thing in the morning. As is SXSW tradition, many of the local radio stations invite a few bands to play the No. 1 most popular time slot: the morning drive. And, as most musicians would attest, 9 a.m. isn’t really the most fun time to play (or attend) a concert.
Carl Newman of The New Pornographers, who played KGSR’s live morning show Wednesday at the W Hotel, was amazed that people bothered to show up.
I mean, he’s got a point. I don’t even like having to be at work at 9 a.m., let alone a concert. And these guys had to wake up early after playing a show at midnight last night at The Main (a.k.a. the original Emo’s).
Good news, though: People still enjoyed it.
As SPIN Magazine wrote, “What is less rock n’ roll than an early start?” I mean, not much.
Also, Austin, I hate to break it to you, but Newman has some controversial opinions on breakfast tacos.
If you missed The New Pornographers last night or this morning, you can check them out Wednesday night at the NPR Showcase at Stubb’s and at the Austin Convention Center Thursday at 3 p.m.
And if you’re a morning person (in which case, tell me your secrets) KGSR’s other morning shows this week include Spoon, Hanson and more.
