Waylon Jennings tribute filmed in Austin to air Friday on CMT

Two years ago when Willie Nelson brought his Fourth of July Picnic back to Austin, many of the participants stuck around for an all-star tribute to Willie’s late friend Waylon Jennings at ACL Live two days later. The show was filmed for later broadcast and DVD release, and this week, it’s finally seeing the light of day.

The late Waylon Jennings, shown here taking part in a 60th-birthday tribute to Willie Nelson, was honored with a 2015 tribute show at ACL Live that airs Friday on the CMT network. SUNG PARK/AMERICAN-STATESMAN 1993

“Outlaw: Celebrating the Music of Waylon Jennings” airs Friday at 9 p.m. on CMT. The broadcast coincides with Friday’s release of a CD/DVD with the same name on Legacy Recordings.

The show includes performances by Jennings’ widow, Jessi Colter, and his son Shooter Jennings along with guests including Alison Krauss, Kris Kristofferson, Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, Lee Ann Womack, Kacey Musgraves, Eric Church and Jamey Johnson. The show closes with a half-dozen tunes that feature Nelson paired with many of the evening’s performers.

The CD/DVD release includes bonus footeage from backstage interviews conducted by KUTX’s Jody Denberg. In one segment titled “Waylon in a Word,” artists are asked what single word comes to mind when they hear the name Waylon. Kristsofferson suggests “truth,” while Shooter understandably says simply, “Dad.” But it’s Willie who gets in the last and most humorous word when he answers, “Jennings.”
