Weekend picks: Celebrate Spring with the laid-back vibes of Reggae Fest, Grateful Dead

OUR TOP PICKS

Friday: Slack Capital 2 record release show at Barracuda.Nathan Lankford from Austin Town Hall and Big Bill’s Eric Braden are back with a second installment of their Austin garage mixtape. This year’s entry features a broad mix of sounds including trippy surf pop from Shivery Shakes, the meditative melodics of Thor & Friends, a mournful pop ditty from Magia Negra and a lazy afternoon croon from Croy and the Boys. Of course, there’s still plenty of beer-swilling, bar-shaking rock ’n’ roll. Eight bands from the compilation including David Israel, Go Fever, Mom Jeans and Croy and the Boys play the release party and 100 percent of your $5 cover benefits SafePlace. 611 E. Austin Reggae Fest 2014. Ralph Barrera/American-Statesman

Friday-Sunday: Austin Reggae Fest at Auditorium Shores. After a few stormy years, we’re crossing our fingers for good weather this go-round for one of Austin’s favorite spring flings. Founded in the riverside park in 1994, right before the tech boom exploded the city’s skyline, the annual celebration of peace and love, Jamaican grooves and irie vibes has grown with the city while remaining “old Austin” through and through. It’s also become one of the largest annual fundraisers for Central Texas Food Bank, raising over $1 million to help the nonprofit fight hunger over the last decade. Jamaican outfit Tarrus Riley with Dean Fraser and the Blak Soil Band headlines Friday. Saturday features Black Slate from the U.K. and Jamaica’s Jesse Royal, and Akae Beka from St. Croix plays on Sunday. $40 3-day, $15 daily (advance) 3 p.m. Friday, noon Saturday-Sunday. 900 W. Riverside Drive. austinreggaefest.com. — D.S.S.

Saturday-Sunday: Bob Weir & the Campfire Band at ACL Live.Last year’s release of “Blue Mountain,” a rare solo album from the Grateful Dead founding member, prompted this tour with a backing crew that consists largely of musicians from renowned indie-rock band the National. Guitarist Aaron Dessner and bassist Scott Devendorf, who helped Weir record “Blue Mountain,” are aboard, along with Devendorf’s brother Bryan Devendorf, the National’s drummer. The lineup also includes bassist Jon Shaw, known for his work with Austin’s Shakey Graves, along with Josh Kaufman and Steve Kimock. 7:30 p.m. $62.50-$82.50. Willie Nelson Blvd. acl-live.com. — P.B.
