Evan Johns tribute set for May 20 at Hole in the Wall

When Austin guitarist Evan Johns died March 11, the city was just gearing up for another South by Southwest stretch, which made it hard for a fitting memorial event to take place quickly. His friends persevered toward that end, though, and the result is a remarkably strong lineup of musicians with ties to Johns’ stellar career.

Set for May 20 at Hole in the Wall, “I Would Not Lay My Guitar Down: A Tribute to the Genius of Evan Johns” will feature headlining performances by local groups Churchwood, the Gay Sportscasters and the LeRoi Brothers. Also on the bill are the D.C. Weenies, featuring former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra backed by an ace crew of roots-rockers.

Rounding out the bill, which features music on both of the club’s stages, are renowned Dallas one-man band Homer Henderson, Johns’ friend since childhood Ivan Brown, Don Leady & the Tailgators, Pehr Smith, Keith Kinkle & Spare Change, and Dunebuggy.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the music starts at 8. The $10 admission charge benefits the SIMS Foundation.
