This year marks the 20th anniversary for the Jump On It! series which was launched at Rosewood Park in 1997, by local rapper Charles “Nook” Byrd, then a teenage young gun on the ATX hip-hop scene. As the city grappled with a surge in gang violence, Jump On It’s aim was to create a positive, all-ages environment where youths could gather weekly for entertainment and social interaction. The weekly series continued for eight years, before switching to an annual event. The full series resumed in 2014.

In addition to music, Jump On It, has always featured a strong social outreach component. This year, event organizers have partnered with the City of Austin to focus on health screenings, from fitness testing to diabetes screens and STD tests. They will also host financial literacy and education workshops.

“We have to put our youth in a position to be successful! We must show them how to unite, teach them the importance that health plays in the quality of their lives and educate them in finances so they can thrive in in Austin’s growing market,” says Breanna Byrd, the event’s operations manager.
