With new ‘Witness’ tour, Katy Perry snubs Austin (again)

Pop superstar Katy Perry has announced the release date for her new album “Witness,” set to drop on June 9. She also announced an extensive roster of dates for the North American leg of the support tour. Sorry folks, there’s no Austin concert on the list.

It’s not personal. The show is playing arenas and stadiums around the country and, without a professional sports team, we don’t have one of those. Perry’s last outing, the 2014 Prismatic tour, only played Dallas and Houston, skipping Central Texas entirely.

The “Witness” tour hits Dallas, Houston and San Antonio in January of next year.

We still do have two somewhat decent shots at a Katy Perry performance in Austin in 2018, though. It’s possible that Katy Perry could be tapped as an Austin City Limits Fest headliner, although given this year’s roster, it seems unlikely that the fest would shell out for a chart-dominating pop spectacle like Perry. Odds are much better for the Formula One Grand Prix.

If the race continues in Austin again next year, Perry becomes a front-runner to follow superstars Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake as a marquis musical guest for the event.
