OUR TOP PICKS
Friday-Saturday: Matthew Sweet, Tommy Keene at 3Ten. What seems sure to be the power-pop double-bill of the summer features headliner Sweet, whose early-’90s album “Girlfriend” remains a classic of the genre, plus a terrific opener in Keene, who’s made more than a dozen records for major and indie labels since the 1980s. Sweet is touring behind his ambitious new double-LP “Tomorrow Forever,” which he’ll also plug at a free 5 p.m. Friday in-store appearance at Waterloo Records. $29.50-$35. 8:30 p.m. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. 3tenaustin.com. — P.B.

Friday: DJ Shadow at Emo’s. An early innovator in sample-based composition, Shadow set the template for modern artists who mine dusty vinyl to mash up sounds and create elaborate concept albums. He also was one of the first artists to experiment with sophisticated visual samples, embellishing his stage shows with accompanying video production. But don’t get it twisted, the OG is still in the game. His politically charged Run the Jewels collaboration, “Nobody Speak,” was one of the hardest hitting singles of 2016. Monofono and Soundfounder open. $28.50-$30. 8 p.m. doors. 2015 E. Riverside Drive. emosaustin.com. — D.S.S.
Saturday: Sphynx album release at Cheer Up Charlie’s. Our favorite lamé-sporting, fabulously mustachioed glam funk champs sweep in from the Western leg of their U.S. tour to celebrate the release of their new album, “Golden Garden,” with a sweaty throwdown. They’re in town for a couple weeks before they take off again, this time heading East to spread their glitzy trash pop and Freddie-Mercury-meets-Phil-Collins vibes across the land. White Walls, Ooni and DJ Ramesh also will perform. $5. 9 p.m. 900 Red River St. cheerupcharlies.com — D.S.S.
Saturday: Antone’s 42nd Anniversary Closing Night with Eddie Shaw at Antone’s. One of the last surviving members of Howlin’ Wolf’s band, Chicago saxophonist Shaw played Antone’s in the early days with the Wolf Gang after their leader’s mid-1970s passing. He’s fixing to retire to Las Vegas, but Austin’s home of the blues has lured him here for one last show, which brings the club’s three-week celebration of its 42nd anniversary to a close. Also on the bill are Carl Weathersby and Little Freddie King. $15-$17. 9 p.m. 305 E. Fifth St. antonesnightclub.com. — P.B.

Saturday-Sunday: Float Fest in San Marcos. Modern music, river activities and outdoor camping converge at this annual weekend bash along the San Marcos River just east of San Marcos. This year’s impressive headlining roster includes Zedd, Weezer, Cage the Elephant, MGMT and Passion Pit; also on the bill are Mac Miller, Girl Talk, Snakehips, Neon Indian, Moon Taxi, Wild Child, Sweet Spirit, Mike Jones, Lil Flip, Ume, Walker Lukens, Los Coast, Heartbyrne, Kind of Nothing, A-Town GetDown, Blunt Force and Resonant Frequency. $65-$170. Music starts at 2 p.m. each day. — P.B.
Sunday: Steve Dean benefit at Saengerrunde Hall. A longtime supporter of Austin music, Dean is battling brain cancer. An impressive lineup of roots musicians have signed on to support him at this all-day fundraiser, including Billy Bacon & Joe King Carrasco, the Paladins, Redd Volkaert, the LeRoi Brothers with Eve Monsees, Susanna Van Tassel, Ted Roddy, Shaun Young & the Three Ringers and the Casa Loma Playboys. Come early for a sale featuring items from Dean’s extensive collection of music memorabilia and vintage clothing. $20 suggested donation. Sale begins at 9 a.m.; music starts at 1 p.m. 1607 San Jacinto Blvd. — P.B.
