Weekend music picks: Rock out by the river at Float Fest, plus Sam Smith

OUR TOP PICKS

Hot tunes for hot times in the city.

Friday-Thursday: Dan Stuart’s Tour of Austin. As leader of 1980s L.A. rock band Green on Red, Stuart played frequently in Austin and even lived here for a short while. He’s called Mexico home for the past eight years, but while visiting family in Tucson this summer, he carved out a week for a “tour of Austin” to celebrate the release of his new CD “The Unfortunate Demise of Marlowe Billings” and an accompanying novel. He’ll be at Waterloo Records on Friday (5 p.m., free); at Opal Divine’s Austin Grill on Saturday with Mike McCoy’s Tontine and the Eric Hisaw Band (8 p.m., $10); at Antone’s Record Shop on Sunday (3 p.m., free); at Kick Butt Coffee on Monday (7 p.m., free) and Carousel Lounge on Tuesday (9 p.m., free), both with Hisaw’s band; sitting in with Jon Dee Graham’s band at the Continental Club on Wednesday (9:45 p.m., $8); and joining Graham upstairs at the Continental Gallery on Thursday (10:30 p.m., $5). See individual venue websites for more details. — P.B.

Friday: The Chamanas at Spider House Ballroom. The pop outfit from El Paso/Ciudad Juarez celebrates the release of “NEA II,” a deluxe edition of their 2017 album, “NEA,” with five new tracks, including their first songs in English. One of the songs, “If You Build It, We Will Break It” is a protest against the Southern border wall featuring Jim Ward of At The Drive In. 9 p.m. 2908 Fruth St. spiderhouse.com — D.S.S.

Sam Smith performs in concert at the Frank Erwin Center.

Saturday: Sam Smith at Erwin Center. It’s no small challenge to follow up the kind of smash British singer Smith had with his 2014 debut “In the Lonely Hour,” which won four Grammys. Even the minor controversy surrounding the similarity of the smash hit “Stay With Me” to Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” seems sweetly sentimental now; Smith was quick to credit Petty retroactively, and now it’s a bond between them that lives on. But Smith seems determined to move forward from that early peak: He won a 2016 Oscar for his song “Writing’s on the Wall” from the James Bond film “Spectre,” and last fall his second album, “The Thrill of It All,” quickly topped the charts. $40.25-$125. 8 p.m. 1701 Red River St. uterwincenter.com. — P.B.

Saturday: Magna Carda homecoming show at the Parish. If the city’s been feeling a little short on cool hip-hop instrumentals and wicked rhymes lately, it might be because this live band hip-hop crew has been putting in hard road time over the last few months. They swing into town off an East Coast stint and head out west at the beginning of August. This show packs extra ATX hip-hop heat with Kydd Jones, M3cca and Troy Bishop filling out the bill. $7 (advance), 214 E. Sixth St. theparishaustin.com — D.S.S.

Saturday: C.J. Chenier, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram at Antone’s. Austin’s home of the blues is in the home stretch of its monthlong 43rd-anniversary celebration. This might be the best night of the bunch, serving both tradition and youth: Louisiana zydeco master Chenier is the son of Clifton Chenier, who helped open the club’s original location back in 1975, while Ingram is a heralded 19-year-old blues guitarist from Mississippi. $18-$20. 10 p.m. 305 E. Fifth St. antonesnightclub.com. — P.B.

Killer Mike, left, and El-P of Run The Jewels are part of this weekend’s Float Fest lineup. Jay Janner/American-Statesman

Saturday-Sunday: Float Fest at Cool River Ranch in San Marcos. Ride the river, then rock out at this festival that combines two favorite Central Texas summer activities. Saturday’s entertainment includes rappers Lil Wayne and Run the Jewels, ’90s indie rockers Modest Mouse and dancefloor dominator Bassnectar. On Sunday, Tame Impala, Cold War Kids and Snoop Dogg perform. $99 1-day, $159 2-day. $20-$40 tubing. Music starts at 2 p.m. 601 Dupuy Ranch Road, Martindale, TX 78655 floatfest.net
