Six Square, a local organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating the historic legacy of the African American community that once thrived in East Austin, invites Austinites to celebrate the neighborhood at the District Cultural Arts Fest on Sept. 1.
The festival takes place in six sites scattered around the district and events include poetry, art and wine at Six Square headquarters, African music, dance and drumming at Doris Miller Auditorium and historical reenactments of the lives of people buried at Oakwood Cemetery. There will also be a bus tour of the district.
The event’s grand finale is an evening musical showcase at Huston Tillotson University. Grammy-nominated artist Mali Music headlines a bill that also includes Sona Jobarteh of The Gambia, Magna Carda, Tobe Nwigwe and Carolyn Blanchard.
