Weekend music picks: Roky Erickson, Nakia and more

It’s a great weekend to take in some local faves.

OUR TOP PICKS

Roky Erickson performs at the SXSW Outdoor Stage at Vic Mathias Shores at SXSW on Saturday March 17, 2018. JAY JANNER / AMERICAN-STATESMAN

Friday: Roky Erickson at Barracuda. This gig is a warmup of sorts for the 71-year-old psych rock pioneer’s tour of the East Coast this fall. For this gig, the former 13th Floor Elevators singer leads a triple-threat bill at Austin’s garage rock haven. Also on the lineup for this one are soul-pop powerhouse the Reputations and rowdy bar rockers the Flesh Lights. $18. 9 p.m. doors. 611 E. Seventh St. barracudaaustin.com — D.S.S.

Friday: Jeremy Nail album release at Cactus Cafe. Nail’s new record “Live Oak” follows “My Mountain,” which earned Nail our Austin360 Artist of the Month designation in May 2016. It picks up where that record left off, full of graceful, understated original songs that gradually work their way under your skin. That’s thanks in part to drummer/co-producer Pat Manske’s careful studio guidance and a solid musical cast that includes keyboard ace Bukka Allen.$12-$15. 8:30 p.m. 2247 Guadalupe St. cactuscafe.org. — P.B.

Friday-Saturday: Nakia and the Blues Grifters album release. Before local artist, Nakia caught national attention on the first season of the NBC singing competition, “The Voice,” his band, the Blues Grifters made a mark on the local club circuit with soulful takes on classic blues numbers. They had started to record some of their favorite tracks when Nakia put the project on extended hold to head to Hollywood. The new album is a collection of those lost recordings, finally brought to light. “I started the band as a way for me to cut loose and get lost in the blues, so I wanted this album to be a homage to the great blues artists who inspired me,” Nakia says. He performs at Waterloo Records at 5 p.m. on Friday (Free, 600 N. Lamar Blvd., waterloorecords.com) and the Saxon Pub on Saturday. $10-$15. 8 p.m. 1320 S. Lamar Blvd. thesaxonpub.com

Saturday: Rico Nasty at Stubb’s indoor. After a couple years steadily building buzz on the hip-hop underground, the 21-year-old rapper also known as Maria Kelly is about to break out. Her Atlantic records debut, “Nasty,” dropped this summer and it’s exactly as rugged and raw as the title implies. She calls her style “sugar trap,” but she wields the sweetness with a fury, performing with mosh pit-provoking punk rock intensity. Technically sold out. 9 p.m. doors. 801 Red River St. stubbsaustin.com — D.S.S.

Saturday: The Alarm at 3Ten. Formed by inspired young rockers who came of age in the midst of Britain’s mid-1970s punk uprising, Welsh band the Alarm took their home turf and eventually the U.S. by storm with their anthem-packed mid-’80s albums “Declaration” and “Strength.” Only frontman Mike Peters remains from those early glory days, but after surviving cancer (and creating the Love Hope Strength Foundation with Austinite and fellow cancer survivor James Chippendale), Peters has taken the Alarm back out on the road. This summer’s “Equals” marks the group’s first album of new material in eight years. Austin singer-songwriter Beaver Nelson opens. $29.50-$35. 8:30 p.m. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. 3tenaustin.com. — P.B.
